Webinar #91 “THE RISING TIDE: Mental Health Outcomes of the Pandemic”
March 11, 2022
We usually refer to waves or surges of COVID-19, somehow there are periods where transmission increases, but there are also “breathers” or times when the numbers of infection are low. Definitely, vaccination has contributed to our current status, where we are more confident about opening up the economy and returning to work and school.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has brought with it a rising tide of psychosocial problems that do not ebb and wane like the infection. Depression, anxiety and even suicidal attempts have been reported to increase around the world. Some of the literature points to 20% of COVID survivors having a mental health problem within 3 months of having the infection. We have all been under chronic stress due to lockdowns, fear of infection and testing positive.
Health care workers and frontliners suffer from knowing that they might put their family members at risk. They also see how lockdowns have affected their seniors, youth, and young children.
What do we know about the rising tide of mental health outcomes from the pandemic? How can we determine if our patients need to be referred for the care of a specialist? What are the common symptoms of depression and anxiety? What can we do to address individuals at risk for mental health problems?
In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will discuss mental health problems that are increasing even as the pandemic seems to be subsiding. Dr. Evangeline dela Fuente will give us a general picture of the mental health impact of COVID-19, while Dr. Blesile Suzette S. Mantaring will talk about a program developed by the University of the Philippines Manila to support students in need of counselling. The program will be opened by Dr. Violeta V. Bautista, Director of PsycServ at the University of the Philippines Diliman, with the Synthesis and Closing Remarks to be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Hospital Operations of the UP Philippine General Hospital.
Join us and learn about how we can be positive agents of change to respond to mental health needs and reduce the stigma of mental health conditions.
Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected.
Together, we can STOP COVID DEATHS!
