Case Capsule: A Chiari malformation occurs when an abnormality is noted in the place where the spinal cord meets the brain in the developing infant. This can result in problems in the brain and/or in the spinal cord. This is a case of a 12-day old infant with multiple congenital abnormalities and pneumonia against the backdrop of a pandemic.

Congenital defects are among the 20 leading causes of death for all ages in the Philippines. Among newborns, it ranks as the third leading cause of death. There are multiple factors – genetic and environmental – that impact on congenital development, highlighting the importance of pre-natal care, nutrition of females of reproductive age. In the context of a pandemic, saving the life of a child with a congenital defect requires immediate diagnosis and surgery.
Preventive measures are needed to address the high rates of congenital defects in the population — including public education, better nutrition, access to health care services for women of reproductive age, and social services and support for special children.
