MARINE ORGANISMS FROM THE PHILIPPINES: BIODIVERSITY AND DRUG DISCOVERY
Dr. Gisela Concepcion
DR. GISELA CONCEPCION is a professor at the Marine Science Institute in UP Diliman, where she teaches graduate courses on marine natural products and related biomedical research and marine biochemistry. She also serves as the Coordinator of the Biophysicochemical Technology Incubation Core Facility and the Biodiversity Program Leader of the Philippine Genome Center. She served as the Vice-President for Academic Affairs of the UP System from 2011 to 2017. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry in 1995 at UP Diliman.
Gisela has isolated and reported the greatest number of bioactive marine natural products in the Philippines. Her projects resulted in a prolific number of publications in international journals, graduate students, and various prestigious awards including the DOST and National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Outstanding Administrator Award, Dioscoro L. Umali Medal, Philippine Federation of Chemical Societies Awards for Chemical Research; Scientist III under UP Scientific Productivity Award; NAST-LELEDFI Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine; and National Research Council of the Philippines Achievement Award in Chemistry.
Her membership includes TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences), NAST (National Academy of Science and Technology), and PAASE (Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering).
