Webinar #36
January 15, 2021 “Are You Afraid of the COVID-19 Mutations and Variants?
A Public Health Perspective”
Special Topic
Just when everyone got excited about the availability of vaccines against COVID-19, a new variant strain of SARS-CoV-2 (B.1.1.7 lineage) has emerged in the United Kingdom with an unusually large number of mutations. The variant has since been detected in numerous countries around the world, leading to restrictions on travel from the UK, South Africa, and others. The variant seems to be more contagious, but there is no evidence to show it causes disease that is more severe. So many questions remain unanswered. Will the vaccines work against this new variant? Do we expect more mutations? What is the impact of these variants on public health measures?
Are you afraid of COVID-19 mutations and variations? In this webinar of STOP COVID DEATHS hosted by the University of the Philippines, one of the leading infectious disease experts in the country, Dr. Marissa M. Alejandria and public health expert Dr. Evalyn A. Roxas, share with us the latest on SARS-CoV-2 mutations and variants, what to expect, and what we should do. The webinar is co-hosted by the UP College of Public Health and will be opened by Dean Vicente Belizario, Jr.
