A difficult airway is defined as the clinical situation in which a conventionally trained anesthesiologist experiences difficulty with upper airway ventilation, endotracheal intubation, or both. Practice guidelines for management of difficult airway assist airway experts on the best approach to manage an anticipated or unanticipated difficult airway. However, patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection requiring tracheal intubation with difficult airway present a unique challenge because current guidelines recommending awake endotracheal intubation in difficult airway scenarios causes an increased risk of infecting health care workers in this aerosol-generating procedure.
