Case Capsule – A 3-year-old boy with acute lymphocytic leukemia is admitted due to severe respiratory distress. Fever, cough and mouth sores started a week prior to referral.
Various antibiotics were given, but the patient’s condition did not improve. On admission the medical team suspected COVID-19 and decided to put him on plasma convalescent therapy.

Every year, there are close to 3,000 new cases of cancers in children reported. It is estimated that half of these are leukemias. Children with leukemia are immunocompromised and prone to infections. With the advent of COVID-19, these children are vulnerable and at high risk for severe COVID-19. This case explores the therapeutic options for management of severe respiratory distress in an immunocompromised child with COVID-19.
