Health care workers in hospitals are constantly exposed to COVID-19 patients and are at high risk for infection. Over the past few weeks, the surge in cases in the community and in hospital admissions, underscores the need for vigilance and strengthening of preventive measures to protect them. Recently a few hospitals in the National Capital Region had to close due to infections among health care workers, pointing to the need for urgent action.
In April 2020, Philippine General Hospital (PGH) along with two other hospitals, the Philippine Lung Center and the Jose Nicanor Rodriguez Medical Center were designated as COVID-19 referral hospitals and were tasked to provide care to patients in severe and critical condition. These three hospitals began developing their own infection control protocols to keep their staff safe.
Six months into the pandemic, PGH has produced a summary of lessons learned on efforts to prevent COVID-19 transmission in the hospital setting that is a rich source of information for other health care facilities.
On 21 August 2020, in commemoration of Foundation Day of the Philippine General Hospital, and as part of continuing efforts to protect the frontline, the regular STOP COVID DEATHS Webinar Series of the University of the Philippines and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation will convene a learning and sharing event entitled: “Keeping Our Health Care Workers Safe: The PGH Experience, a National Virtual Town Hall Meeting for Hospitals”
It is proposed that at this virtual event, the findings of PGH on what works and what doesn’t work in protection of health care workers will be further disseminated with lessons learned from the other COVID-19 referral hospitals.
