Prof. Martin Genodepa

Martin Genodepa is a visual artist, teacher, and cultural worker. He is currently the Vice Chancellor of UP Visayas for Planning and Development. He is thoroughly UP-educated: Bachelor of Arts Humanities, Master of Development Communication and had completed the course work in the Master of Fine Arts Program of the College of Fine Arts, UP Diliman. He received a full grant from the Vermont Studio Center’s Freeman Fellowship for Asian Artists (1999) and the Ford Foundation International Fellowship (2009).

The Government of Canada Awards was offered him in 2005 and he was named Outstanding UP Professional in 2008 during the UP Centennial celebrations in UP Visayas. He was also recipient of the Jose and Asuncion Joya Professorial Chair for the Arts Program of UP Visayas (2014, 2015, 2017). Genodepa is a sculptor and does installation art. He has had 15 solo exhibitions getting favorable reviews from critics like Eric Torres, Alice Guillermo, Patrick Flores, Helen Yu-Rivera, and Tito Valiente. He was Secretary of the Committee on Visual Arts of the National Commission for Culture and Arts from 1998-2001. He is one of the Volume Editors of Pananaw 8 Journal of Philippine Visual Arts(2014) and Book Editor of Kadagatan Tubtub Kabudikan – From the Seas to the Mountains Traditional Knowledge Systems of Panay and Guimaras (2017). He writes reviews of art exhibitions held in Iloilo. He was curator of the UPV Art Gallery and helped established the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA),curating the museum’s five initial five exhibitions.

He has been curating exhibitions by Ilonggo artists and spearheading local and international art and culture events: Conference Director of VIVA ExCon 1996, Executive Director of VIVA ExCon 2016, Steering Committee Chair of the International Council of Museums Asia Pacific Conference 2015, Conference Chair/Convenor of Pagtib-ong: The UP Visayas International Conference on Intangible Cultural Heritage 2017,2018. He is currently Bureau Member for Southeast Asia of the Asia Pacific Higher Education Network for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (APHEN-ICH) and Chairperson of the Philippine Network for Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding ( Philippine NICHES).
