Manuel Conde: Defining Cinema for the Filipino | Dr. Nicanor G. Tiongson

Dr. Tiongson is a Professor Emeritus at the UP Film Institute, and former dean of the UP College of Mass Communication (2003-2006) in Diliman. He served as artistic director and vice president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (1986-1994) and chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (2001). He is a founding member (1975) and former chair (1983) of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, founding member of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. (2005) and of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

He has published film articles and reviews in journals, newspapers, and magazines. For his achievements, he has received the Manila Critics Circle awards, the National Book Development Association Best Book Award, the Gawad Chanselor for Outstanding Research, the UP Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award, the National Research Council of the Philippines award, Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award, and the CCP Centennial Honors for the Arts.
